Le Grand Geste Abstrakter Expressionismus 1946–1964
In 1959, gestural abstract painting reached its peak at documenta II in Kassel. Fourteen years after the end of the Second World War, a central trend in painting was celebrated here, presenting itself as an international phenomenon spanning the Western world. With this documenta exhibition and a major tour of American abstract expressionism through several European capitals the year before, so-called informal painting attained official status, as it were. The significance of “abstraction as a universal language” had become accepted and established.
